What to Expect During a Massage Treatment

Hello! Thank you for choosing Inner Peace Massage Therapy. If this is your first visit please make sure to arrive a little early for your appointment to fill out paperwork and to use the restroom before your session. We will ask lots of questions about you to figure out what kind of massage will fit your needs. There are certain conditions that will require a doctor's note before receiving a massage. If you are under a doctor's care, it is best to call our office first and let us know before your appointment so we can decide if a doctor's note is needed.

Some contraindications/cautions for massage are:

-If you are pregnant and have pre-eclampsia

-Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure/Hypertension

Massage could spread the disease. Once cancer is resolved it could be alright to massage but a doctor's note is needed.

-Internal or external bleeding

-Recent surgery

-Acute inflammation

-Broken Bones

-Infectious Skin Conditions

Warts, ring worm, staph infection, poison ivy, ringworm, impetigo or any infectious skin that is viral, parasitic, bacterial or fungal in nature.

Fever indicates there's an infection somewhere within the body. Massage can worsen and work counter to what you're body is doing to fight things off.

-Phlebitis, Deep Vein Thrombosis, Varicose Veins, Blood Clots

We will not massage someone who's senses are impaired from illegal drugs and alcohol.

-Intentions that are sexual in nature

-Nausea and vomiting

-Recent Contusion

Massage is fine for people with diabetes. There are two things to keep in mind: First, blood sugars drop after a massage, so you may need to have a snack ready. Second, if peripheral neuropathy is present, deep tissue work is contraindicated because you won't be able to give accurate feedback about pressure.

After the intake evaluation we will leave the room to allow you to undress and lie comfortably under the linens. You will remained covered during the entire massage session. We encourage you to communicate with your therapist about your treatment goals and expectations before the massage and to give feedback during the massage to ensure you get the most out of your session. Afterwards, any treatment plans or goals will be discussed and we encourage you to drink water after your session. We do offer massage packages at a discount.

“Since a teenager I have been plagued with IBS, phantom pains, depression/confusion and other medical issues that didn’t seem to be related. I was even told that I had a mytral valve prolapse. Finally, in my late twenties I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. ALL of these symptoms were directly related to fibromyalgia.

After several years of muscle relaxers and over the counter pain medications, I decided there had to be a better way. A friend gave me a gift certificate for a massage. I explained my problems to the therapist and she applied trigger point therapy and “Swedish style” massages which is a soothing and relaxation technique which has done wonders for my pain. It has allowed me only have to use the pain medication on a limited basis.

Not only do the massages ease the tension in the muscles, but also allows me to relax and shut out the stresses that cause even more tension and pain. I have been getting massages on a weekly basis for almost 10 years now. Even missing one week, I can feel the difference physically and mentally. I have come to realize therapeutic massage is a tool that helps me take more control of my Fibromyalgia in a positive, healing way.” Elizabeth

"After being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis last year, I looked into things recommended to help (in addition to medication). Massages were among the recommended. I decided to give it a try. As I had never had a massage before, I was somewhat worried going in that it might be more painful  than helpful.  I was worried for nothing!  Inner Peace had a questionnaire to be filled out by new clients, which included questions about arthritis, etc.  Katharine discussed this with me prior to the massage. This reduced a lot of my concerns prior to the massage. For me, pain tends to cause my stress levels to go up. A massage helps with both.  During a massage, I can feel the tension/stress ease away along with the stiffness.  I have trouble with my shoulders, neck, hands/wrists and feet/ankles.   After a massage (not only am I completely relaxed), my pain levels are reduced, the stiffness reduced and my movement better. I almost feel normal again! Massage can’t replace medication, but I would highly recommend it as beneficial for pain/stiffness/mobility/stress/tension/etc. It doesn’t last forever, but with regular massages, it does reduce a lot of the pain/stiffness/tension. There are many massage options to choose from; choose the time length or choose a specific focal point and try it!  My belief is that you'll be making another appointment!" - Brittany

"In my case, I am 68 years old and absolutely love to play golf. Unfortunately, I experienced a bad total knee replacement that took three surgeries to finally recover. My knee developed an infection resulting in it having to be removed.Following was a period where I was practically immobile and took massive doses of antibiotics to kill all bacteria in my body (they could not identify the infection). During the third operation a knee was finally put in but scar tissues prevented me from gaining total flexion of my joint. These complications caused my hips and lower back to become a constant source of pain, especially when I played golf. The inflammation and pain caused the muscle groups to become tight restricting my shoulder turn and hip flexion. All of this equals a terrible golf game causing me to seek a solution that would allow me to enjoy golf again.Inner Peace Massage and specifically Katherine Taylor was the solution that allowed me to return to playing golf and having fun by periodically getting stretching sessions and mixing it with a deep tissue and therapeutic massages. I specifically have issues with my lumbar #4 and sciatic nerve. Katherine uses techniques that relax the muscles allowing the area to realign, circulation to increase, and allow me to enjoy golf without the tightness and pain. She was trained in ballet and exhibits the touch of a feather when stretching you.I strongly recommend Inner Peace Massage and specifically Katherine Taylor as a solution for you to go to if you have issues with tight muscle groups, problems relaxing, bad circulation, or pinched nerves. She truly cares about curing your issues and strives to make you feel better. I play golf and enjoy it because of her dedication and caring attitude.Thank You Katharine!" -Kelly
